New Zealand – Heaven on Earth

When I first landed in this small town, the snow-capped mountains enthralled me.

Before my eyes was magazine cover-worthy Queenstown. Accor hotels such as Mercure, Novotel and Sofitel are all here. While this was my first time in New Zealand, it’s the third time I’ve used my Stay Plus and 50% savings on dinner at a hotel.

For the first night, I chose to stay at Mercure Queenstown Resort. The receptionist brought me a welcome drink upon arrival – the benefit of being an Accor Plus member, redeemable at any bar in the hotel.

I was impressed with the views and the atmosphere at this hotel. Through my window were views of Lake Wakatipu surrounded by snow covered mountains. The cold weather outside made it almost impossible for me to climb out of the soft, warm bed. However, the views were too peaceful and magnificent to miss.

On the second night, I moved to the sophisticated Sofitel Queenstown Hotel and Spa. The hotel is the epitome of modern luxury and impeccable service. Again, I was met with a welcome drink when I checked in with my Accor Plus membership. I had the choice of enjoying my drink at any bar or restaurant in the hotel so I chose the 1789 Wine & Jazz Lounge. The restaurant is decorated in red and black and it made me think how fun it would be to bring some friends here.

I received an invitation for the Cheese & Wine event at Penthouse No. 10. The friendly manager made sure I was well taken care of and we enjoyed a fun conversation. I had booked a room without breakfast but was quick to realise it was time to use my Accor Plus benefits again by treating myself to a breakfast buffet at half price.

Strategically located in the heart of Queenstown, the hotel has quick access to the Skyline Gondola. Situated across the road from Sofitel is Fergburger – the world-famous burger place in Queenstown. It’s also close to many attractions like Lake Wakatipu, ice cream parlours and souvenir shops.

The last hotel of my trip was the newly opened SO/ Auckland in the heart of the city, making it easy to get to the main attractions such as the Sky Tower – only 400 metres from the hotel.

SO/ Auckland welcomes guests with the ‘vertical’ sofa, where everyone takes a selfie upon arrival. Not only is the hotel stylish, it’s also modern and safe. Just tap your key card on the buttonless lifts and it will take you straight up to your floor.

I treated myself to the SO Suite. The generously sized windows showcase the views of Auckland below. The spacious suite comes with a separate lounge, bedroom and a massive bathtub in the middle of the bathroom for a leisurely bubble bath.

Again, I used my Accor Plus card here to make the most of my benefits. This time, I chose to have a welcome drink at the rooftop HI-SO Bar. Both indoor and outdoor areas looked sophisticated. There’s a quiet zone for those seeking privacy or an outdoor terrace to embrace the cool air.

I looked forward to a swim at Soaked. The heated indoor lap pool is one of the selling points of the hotel. For my last dinner, I couldn’t help but use my Accor Plus privilege again to receive a 50% discount on my meal. Thanks to Accor Plus for making my first New Zealand trip truly unforgettable.
