A hundred years of heritage

In 2018, the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta celebrated its 100th year. Discover how this beautiful property has not only stood the test of time, but embraced it.

Known as the cradle of Java, Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Indonesia and a city deeply ingrained in tradition. Its diverse history, both natural and man-made, has made it a fascinating destination for locals and tourists alike. Whether walking the charming streets or visiting the city’s incredible historical sites, there is something new to discover on every corner.

Slightly further afield, the majestic Mount Merapi peers through a shroud of cloud and smoke, a constant reminder that this is Indonesia’s most active volcano. Meanwhile, the World’s largest Buddhist temple – Borobudur, entices countless visitors to the region year-round for its serene views and spiritual significance.

In the centre of this cultural melting pot lies a historical icon in its own right, The Phoenix Yogyakarta MGallery By Sofitel

The Phoenix Hotel has stood in one iteration or another on the site for 100 years; at one time a pensioner’s retreat, other times a private property, and finally as a luxury hotel. It has faced war and economic depression and yet throughout all of this change and upheaval the building has retained the grandeur and splendour that made it famous in the first place.

Built on a unique fusion of Dutch, Chinese and Javanese influences, the hotel is immediately iconic. Colonial architecture meets the Phoenix’s signature batik design and every corridor showcases unique art pieces. The hotel also embodies true Javanese hospitality, from a warm smile and a sweet treat to a welcome gift for executive or suite room guests.

Few properties reach such a significant milestone without picking up some stories along the way, and the Phoenix is no exception. Take a walk past the hotel’s suites and you begin to notice the elegant brass plaques on each of the door. Each named after a significant person or place whose story has contributed to the wider tale of the hotel. Arguably the most famous of the Phoenix’s many tenants is Mr. Soekarno – Indonesia’s first President for whom the hotel acted as the official residence following the withdrawal of Japan after World War 2.

Accor Plus Tip

Walk in the footsteps of Mr. Soekarno, Indonesia’s first President. His room during his tenure was the Executive Room number #201 (now aptly named Soekarno Room) and can be requested upon booking.

In the hotel’s centenary year, there were some truly unique and exciting celebrations taking place. Be on the lookout in the future for early access to offers and discounts including Red Hot Room promotions.

Vintage Wheels

It doesn’t get much more exclusive than a ride around town in your own personal vintage Mercedes. Speak to the concierge and request a tour through the streets of Yogyakarta to some of the most famous landmarks, all the while being guided by your expert driver on the history and stories of the region. Built in 1961, the Mercedes Benz Mercy 180 is the perfect way to get a taste of yesteryear as you gently cruise beneath the tamarind trees and down the winding streets.

Accor Plus Tip:

In celebration of the Phoenix’s Hotel’s centenary, Accor Plus members have access to the Secret Escape offer below. This lasts all year and includes (alongside a host of other benefits), a personal pick up in this iconic vehicle to ensure that the start your trip is as full of classic charm as your stay at the hotel.

Gin Sling

The Phoenix Hotel’s signature cocktail is one to savour. That’s immediately evident in the meticulous crafting of the cocktail, right at your table. Carefully blending Gin, Soda, Lime and Grenadine, this is the perfect drink to beat the heat and unwind.

Accor Plus Tip

Order a Gin Sling on the Terrace of 1918 and sit back as your very own bartender brings each of the ingredients to your table to prepare it in front of your eyes. Even better, enjoy 15% discount on all drinks with your Accor Plus Card.

Cocktails aren’t the only area where The Phoenix excels; its culinary offerings are sure to whet your appetite. Whether you’re soaking in the gentle piano melodies of fine-dining restaurant Paprika or relaxing on 1918’s Terrace, you’ll be spoilt for choice by the eclectic mix of Western, Asian and Local dishes on offer.

Accor Plus Tip

Enjoy an afternoon pick-me-up of delicious Kopi Luwak, Indonesia’s world-renowned coffee while waiting for your lunch. Remember Accor Plus members can get up to 50% off their dining bill, so don’t be afraid to try a bit of everything.

With its signature blend of tradition, style and hospitality, as well as a host of celebrations, The Phoenix Hotel’s 100th year is shaping up to be its best yet.
